10 Things Every First-Time Cruiser Should Know
Thinking about your first cruise? Here are the essential tips that will save you money, stress, and confusion before you ever step on the ship.
So you've decided to take the plunge and book your first cruise. Congratulations — you're about to discover one of the best vacation formats on the planet. But before you set sail, there are a few things I wish someone had told me before my first voyage. Consider this your cheat sheet.
1. Book Early for the Best Cabin Selection
The best cabins go fast. If you have a preference — balcony, midship, lower deck — book as early as possible. Waiting until the last minute might save a few dollars, but you'll likely end up with whatever's left. For popular sailings like holiday weeks and spring break, booking 9–12 months out is not unusual.
2. Understand What's Actually Included
Your cruise fare covers your cabin, most meals at the main dining room and buffet, entertainment, and access to most ship amenities. What it does NOT cover: specialty dining restaurants, alcoholic beverages, Wi-Fi, shore excursions, spa services, and gratuities. Budget for these extras so you're not caught off guard.
3. Prepay Your Gratuities
Most cruise lines charge $16–$20 per person per day in gratuities, automatically added to your onboard account. Prepaying at booking locks in the current rate and simplifies your onboard budget. It's one less thing to think about when you're trying to relax.
4. Get Travel Insurance
I know, I know — it feels like an unnecessary expense. But travel insurance is one of the smartest investments you can make for a cruise vacation. Medical emergencies at sea, missed embarkation due to flight delays, or a hurricane rerouting your itinerary — these things happen. A good policy protects your investment and your health.
5. Arrive the Day Before Embarkation
Never fly in the morning of your cruise departure. If your flight is delayed, you miss the ship — and the ship will not wait. Arrive the day before, stay near the port, and start your vacation relaxed instead of stressed.
6. Pack Smart, Not Heavy
Most cruise ships have laundry facilities or laundry service. You don't need to pack for every possible scenario. Focus on versatile pieces, comfortable walking shoes for port days, and one or two dressier outfits for formal nights. Check your cruise line's dress code before you pack.
7. Set Up Your Onboard Account Before You Board
Most cruise lines let you register a credit card and complete check-in online before embarkation day. Do this. It speeds up the boarding process significantly and means you're sipping a welcome drink while others are still standing in line.
8. Download the Cruise Line's App
Nearly every major cruise line has a mobile app that serves as your onboard hub — daily schedules, restaurant reservations, messaging your travel companions, and even your room key on some ships. Download it before you leave home and familiarize yourself with it.
9. Shore Excursions: Book Wisely
You have two options for shore excursions: book through the cruise line or independently. Cruise line excursions are more expensive but guarantee you'll be back on the ship on time. Independent tours are often more personalized and affordable, but you're responsible for your own timing. If you go independent, always build in a buffer — ships do leave without passengers who are late.
10. Relax and Let Yourself Enjoy It
First-time cruisers often spend the first day or two trying to figure everything out. Give yourself grace. The ship is designed to be intuitive. The crew is there to help. You'll find your rhythm quickly, and by day two you'll wonder why you didn't cruise sooner.
